Depleted Oakham tie but deserved to win

A depleted Oakham side picked up an impressive draw at second placed Spalding but it could so easily have been a win.

"t 10am on Saturday morning we only had 12 players. I managed to cobble a team together. It was probably on paper the weakest team we have had out all season. But, the players who went out there were superb. They all performed and rose to the challenge."

Oakham Coach

TOM ARMSTRONG

Coach Tom Armstrong explained: “At 10am on Saturday morning we only had 12 players. I managed to cobble a team together. It was probably on paper the weakest team we have had out all season. But, the players who went out there were superb. They all performed and rose to the challenge.”

Oakham travelled with a small pack and a long afternoon looked on the cards as the hosts raced into a 17-0 lead within the first ten minutes.

“They had some big ball carriers and we were missing all ours,” continued Tom.

The match seemed to turn around for Oakham after that and they managed to get on the scoresheet through two Mark Matthews penalties who produced a perfect dead ball kicking game.

Oakham struck first in the second half, Will Burrows scoring, Matthews added the extras. He himself then scored to give Oakham a 20-17 lead. Spalding levelled through a penalty but Matthews again scored and converted to give the Oaks a 27-20 lead. With just three minutes remaining Spalding drew level again with a converted try.

Oakham, not satisfied with a draw, went looking for the win and very nearly got it but Matthews' long range drop goal attempt fell just short.

“At the end of the game I think Spalding were definitely lucky to come away with a draw. It was a very good performance by us.”

Oakham are without a fixture this Saturday but the seconds play new Rutland inhabitants, Stoneygate, in a friendly at Uppingham Community College.
