Taste of revenge so sweet for Stamford

This may have been a very different Worksop side to the one that terrorised Stamford on that early November afternoon - but no matter! Vengeance was exquisitely sweet in this Doodson Cup tie.

True, Worksop featured only four players from that 6-1 NPL mauling, but since that result Stamford haven’t looked back. Last night made it five games unbeaten on the bounce and produced a commanding performance, especially in the second half. So much so that I suspect the same Worksop side would have found it anything but a pushover last night.

The match started off like an exhibition game with both sides knocking the ball around well, but without any clear openings in the first quarter of an hour.

The first real test came on 15 minutes and it was the visitors who went closest to opening the score. Josh Davies found Aaron Cole with a good ball forward and he tricked his way inside to let fly with an effort which Daniels' goalkeeper Will Jones did well to push away.

'Blazed over'

Minutes later and Stamford were ahead. Skipper Richard Jones, whose programme notes emphasised the need for victory here, launched a clearance forward. It beat the Worksop backline and Nabil Shariff made it two in two as he calmly lobbed the ball over a stranded Jan Budtz.

Stamford went close again when a great run from David Moyo was fed into Jordan Smith who shot just wide.

The lead was shortlived as Stamford failed to clear their lines and Jack Adams' perseverance at the by line saw him feed the ball to Jack Barnett who fired home on 24 minutes.

Jon Challinor then linked up well with Moyo but he dragged his shot wide. Barnett blazed over for Worksop and the last real chance of the half fell to Smith but he couldn’t keep his free header on target from a Shawn Richards cross.

At half time Stamford manager David Staff withdrew Jack Ashton and Liam Richardson, introducing Ryan Robbins and Alvin Jarvis. Shariff moved back to a more defensive role, allowing Richards to be more attack minded.

'Excellent corners'

Stamford were a lot more direct with their play and Robbins and Richards in particular, looked to run at their markers at every opportunity.

Robbins rippled the side netting before seeing another low effort fumbled behind for a corner by Budtz as Stamford enjoyed an excellent spell of pressure. From one of Dan Lawlor’s excellent corners the pressurised Budtz fisted away right under his crossbar.

Lawlor is another player growing in stature in this new confident looking Daniels side. He really put himself about and drove attacks forward all evening.

There was a fear that Stamford hadn’t made their possession count as Worksop enjoyed a spell of their own but the Daniels defence stood firm and Jones, in goal, was only called upon to mop up balls over the top.

With a quarter of an hour to go history was made for the Daniels when under 18 player Alex Walton was introduced in place of Smith.

His introduction meant that Dad Guy, Alex and brother Jake have all represented the club - the first father and two sons combination to do so.

'Breakthrough'

He very nearly marked his arrival with a goal just two minutes after coming on. Robbins again tormented down the left and his shot was half saved by Budtz but was still going in, only for centre half Chris Salt to hook off the line. The follow up by Walton was deflected for a corner.

With ten minutes to go Stamford found the breakthrough. Moyo received the ball from Richards,  jinxed his way into the area and powered  the ball past Budtz at his near post.

Five minutes later, newly crowned player of the month for October, Robbins, continued his rich scoring form, taking his run to six matches – one which started in that hammering at Worksop. Receiving the ball from Moyo on the edge of the box he drove into the area and placed his shot in at the far post.

Lawlor nearly turned it into a rout but his fierce drive was palmed away by Budtz.

The final whistle went on what was another highly satisfactorily and historical night for the Daniels who now wait to learn who they face in the next round.
