Nine goal romp ends early season blip for Stones

Blackstones FC 9 Oakham United 0

Stones started this game desperately needing a result to energise the season following defeat at Histon in the FA Vase and midweek in the league by Pinchbeck, but this game started cagey with both teams contesting the midfield, but on the quarter hour mark De Sousa raced down the right wing to the by-line and pulled back to Pell who stretched to guide the ball into the net.  Three minutes later Barker shrugged of defensive attempts to impede his progress into the box to drive the ball into the goalmouth and onto the head of Harrold, and into the goal.

Stones continued to apply pressure on goal but Oakham held firm with Keeper Bedford pulling of several fine saves to deny the Stones attack.  However, the pressure was becoming relentless and just on half time Ginty crossed the ball from 35 yards into the penalty box where it is met by Papworth and despatched into the net.

The second half resumed with Stones laying siege to the visitor’s box, 9 minutes in, De Sousa picked the ball up outside the box in front of goal and started a dancing lone run into the box and drove the ball past the keeper.  Harrold’s second came 2 minutes later when he took procession of the ball 25 yards out and seeing the keeper off his line lobbed a cheeky chip into the goal.  Stones maintained the pressure with Bates drawing a fingertip save from the visiting keeper.  Once more De Sousa took on the visiting defence in the 71st minute, racing down the right wing and firing the ball across the goal, Ginty charging in between two defenders forced a defensive error and the defender ran the ball into his own net.  Straight after the restart Stones retook procession and Oakham still smarting from the OG brought Ginty down inside the area, Ginty duly planted the penalty firmly in the back of the net.  On 77 minutes Buttery, on for Boome, drove a long distance shot through a crowd of players and straight into the bottom right corner of the goal, and with virtually the last kick of the ball Barker latched onto a centred cross and slid the ball into the corner of the goal to complete the scoring and take all 3 points.
