Five Star Ketton climbed to the top of the Peterborough and District Youth League Under 18 League, Division Two, after this convincing win against Bourne.
Ketton dominated from start to finish and took an early lead through Lewis Morley, the striker poaching a goal after a Joe Leftley free kick was not dealt with by the Bourne ‘keeper.
The early strike seemed to curb Ketton’s flowing movement, players taking too many touches as they tried to overplay. Their cause wasn’t helped with a strong backwind, coupled with a hard pitch, which sent balls scurrying past the onrushing home forwards.
This was highlighted when Nick Mainstone went on a superb run but his pass to Harrison Miles was slightly too strong and the right sided midfielder was unable to gather.
Morley then hooked an effort just wide and a Mainstone corner fizzed across the Bourne six yard with a gaggle of Ketton players unable to make contact as they looked for a second. At the other end the back four of captain Tyler Sculthorpe and centre half partner Lefley, Jonnny Cole and Jonny Weaver, cut out any Bourne threat to leave goalkeeper Adam Blick a mere spectator.
'coped a lot better'
The second goal did finally come and it was through a combination that has yielded so many goals this season. Morley played in Will Bird who stood up his marker before shifting the ball quickly and powering home with his right foot from the edge of the box into the bottom left corner. That made it 2-0 at half time.
Bourne, with the wind behind them, sought to get back in the game but Ketton coped a lot better with the wind in their faces. Keeping the ball on the floor they continued to cause the visiting defence problems. Miles looked to pull the trigger after being played in but a defender just took the ball from him. Bird then played in Brad Freeman who saw his effort well saved.
At the other end, Blick showed an excellent command of his box to cut out any rare Bourne attacks. Ketton’s third goal came when a long throw by Miles was flicked on by Bird and deflected into his own goal by a Bourne defender. The fourth soon followed. Freeman released Sculthorpe to slot home. Miles then completed the scoring, His run from the right hand side finished with a powerful shot into the bottom corner.
Bird missed a chance to add to his tally when he blasted over and then Jack Wright was denied by the crossbar.
The victory sets Ketton up for their fast approaching title deciding home and away matches with Spalding. |
KETTON: Adam Blick, Jonny Cole, Jonny Weaver, Joe Leftley, Tyler Sculthorpe, Ash Townsend, Harrison Miles, Jack Wright, Nick Maintstone, Will Bird, Brad Freeman and Lewis Morley.
