A late Max Cooper strike clinched the Ancaster Cup for Bourne Reserves as they finally ended the threat posed by Cottesmore.

Bourne skipper Dan Mason is presented the Ancaster Cup by UCL chairman John Weeks

The Rutland side, trailing 3-2 at the time, were piling on the pressure but, with the game now four minutes from time, Cooper guided his long range effort home to hand the silverware to The Wakes.

After losing in last year’s final to Stamford Lions, Bourne bounced straight back to beat Cottesmore who, having won the famous old trophy twice before, had made this their third final in five years.

Played in front of a large crowd, and on an Abbey Lawns pitch that looked every bit a pre-season surface rather than one at the end of its campaign, the light drizzle had slicked up conditions. Bourne, buoyed after their dramatic semi-final win over Lions on Monday night, took advantage to knock  the ball around well.

'Cooper just over with early chance'

Cooper lifted an early chance over the bar at the back post before Cottesmore began to find their feet and Jake Culverwell’s snap shot was well saved by Aidan Finn at his near post.

Just eight minutes in and Bourne had the lead, Jack Humphries’s clever flick found Troy Waters who lifted the ball over Gary Shaw in the Amateurs goal. Bourne nearly struck a quick second, Will Harris’s looping effort bouncing back off the crossbar with Waters close to steering the loose ball home.

The advantage lasted just 11 minutes, Shaun Denigan, powering home a close range header from an Alex Smith cross after his initial corner had been cleared back to him.

Bourne were quick to reclaim the advantage, Rob Dunn, with a neat turn and a low drive from the edge of the box, edging them  ahead.

Cottesmore responded well, and they created the best chances for the remainder of the half. Bourne skipper Dan Mason, produced a brave block to deny Jamie Black a clear shot on goal. The young striker then steered a free header over as he ghosted in onto an Alex Smith cross.

The half ended with Danny Seals shooting just wide after excellent control and turn in the box to take an Alex Smith cross.

'Bourne strike early in second half'

Just two minutes into the second half and Bourne had increased their lead. Ben Moss’s initial shot, as the ball pinged around the box following a corner, struck the post and Mason was on hand to tap home the rebound.

Again Cottesmore responded quickly, Carl Hamnett sending a looping header from a Luke Smith free-kick over Finn and in at the far post.

As the game wore on Bourne sat further back but with Waters, Cooper and Humphries prepared to hit Amateurs on the counter, it proved a fascinating end to the game.

Cooper, bursting down the left, was denied by the legs of Shaw from a tight angle before the Cottesmore goalkeeper, then bringing down Waters outside of his box, received a yellow card with the forward going away from goal.

Cottesmore continued to be dangerous at set play, Culverwell’s looping header was touched over the bar by Finn. Seals placed a free-kick just past the post and Alex Smith struck a powerful effort just wide before Luke Smith’s controlled volley from a high ball was also just wide of the mark.

Cooper’s pace again created him an opening, his shot going into the side netting. With minutes remaining Bourne wrapped up the win, Shaw came out of his box to head clear a through ball it fell to Cooper whose first time shot found the back of the net.

Congratulations to Bourne Town who again were superb hosts for the final and also to Charlie Sentance who has done another fantastic job in organising the competition.  The man of the match, chosen by Pete Chappell, was Cooper, while UCL chairman John Weeks handed out the trophies.
