Bourne Girls kick off season with goalless draw

Despite having the majority of possession and numerous chances, Bourne Town Junior U13 Girls got their season started with a goalless draw at home to the division’s early pace setters Cambridge City.

Bourne started brightly against a strong Cambridge side and were unlucky not to take the lead in the first minute, as Esme Thorley met a Milly Ramm corner and flicked her effort just the wrong side of the post.

Esme went even closer minutes later, when, picking up the ball inside her own half and outpacing the opposition to run clear through on goal only to see her effort beat the keeper but also the post.

Along with Nicole Haynes and Edie Duncomb, the attacking 3 of Bourne were causing the Cambridge defence plenty of problems and backed by the holding duo of Milly Ramm and Chloe Kelby, Cambridge were struggling to get out of their own half and excellent pressing play saw a procession of corners and chances created, but the away goalie was having a superb game to keep the scores level.

Olivia Jedruszak then pulled another effort wide for Bourne when well positioned and it seemed then that it might not be Bourne’s day.

Bourne handed a debut to Lara Austin at the back, who settled superbly into her task and along with Ellie HallMatilda Manningand Olivia Jedruszak were giving the Cambridge side nothing to work on.

With the first half drawing to a close Cambridge had their first shot on target, a speculative long range effort seemed to be heading for the top corner, before Lilia Brett in the Bourne goal did well to palm away.

The first half ended with player of the match Edie Duncomb running at the defence and causing problems, and this was to continue in the second half.

Her powerful running created 3 more chances at the start of the half, the best of which was put wide by the hard working Nicole Haynes.

With Milly Ramm and Chloe Kelby winning everything in midfield, the Bourne defence were mainly spectators in the second half, although along with Lilia Brett they maintained concentration to clear any danger and maintain a clean sheet.

As the match entered the final minutes, Edie Duncomb fired narrowly wide and more chances were created and wasted for Bourne, with the Cambridge goalkeeper making a string of fine saves from the Bourne team.

With the shots and corner counter going into overdrive Bourne pressed for a winner but, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and the girls had to settle for a point.
