Durston racks up 101st ton as Oakham are off the mark

Stamford AFC Club Shop

After passing the landmark of 100 centuries last weekend, Oakham’s Wes Durston moved added another as the Rutland side recorded their first Leicestershire League Division One win of the season.

The result moved Oakham out of the bottom two, Durston was in ominous form blasting 15 fours and nine sixes in his 125 not out in his 55 ball innings. He brought up his three figures in just 45 balls!

Oakham cruising past Houghton’s 173 all out with eight wickets in hand and after just 18.4 overs.

He and Mark Owen, 32 not out, had put on 139 for an unbeaten third wicket.

In the field, Oakham let their standards slip after reducing their visitors to 126-9. A Khunti, 90 not out and, 32 wides helping them post their final total. Charlie Baker, 5-58 and Sam Janes, 3-45, the main wicket takers.

Skipper Richard Martin admitted he had mixed emotions after: “I felt that in such an important game we lost control when we had them nine down. We bowled 30 individual wides which is an extra five overs of deliveries.

“173 was a worrying total and after a couple of early wickets we could have been in trouble. Wes was superb again, they kept trying to bowl too short and he just whacked it for six!

“We have Ed Tattersall, Sean Cowley and Ben Southern to come back for next week. We are starting to get a good squad together.”

Oakham travel to Kibworth 2nds this Saturday who lost an agonisingly close game by 1 run to Uppingham at the weekend.
